From MIPIM – End of day two

Alex Smith, head of construction and engineering, reports from the international property event MIPIM in Cannes.

Day two

After two full days at MIPIM 2018, walking 35,000 steps with breakfast meetings, presentations and networking at night, what are my reflections so far?

The messages given by the UK Midlands contingent are clear. There are many opportunities to invest across the Midlands on a number of residential, commercial or mixed-use developments. Notwithstanding the uncertainties of Brexit with the value of sterling favouring international investors, there are very good reasons to invest in the UK and the Midlands in particular. Connectivity, parties working together over a number of years to successfully bring the Commonwealth Games to Birmingham in 2022 will bring new infrastructure, new facilities and a legacy to benefit many in the future.

The opportunity to meet new contacts and establish new relationships cannot be under estimated. Many thousands of people are here for the same reason – to grow their businesses and from the meetings and events I have attended, the opportunities to follow-up on our return to the UK bodes well for the future.

Day one

Following a rainy journey to Birmingham airport, myself and five colleagues from Shakespeare Martineau were pleased to arrive in the dedicated UKMidlands lounge where we met with the other 200 or so delegates ahead of our flight to MIPIM 2018.

One short flight and a transfer to Cannes later we arrived on the Croisette, ready for the events to commence. Just two tonight – a Midlands drink reception and a gala dinner. Andy Street’s excellent welcome speech was quickly followed by the FIABCI gala dinner where around 250 delegates from around the globe met to network and dine. Indicative of a busy week ahead, and that’s just the evenings, let alone the planned breakfasts, lunches and one-to-one meetings!

All in all, a great start for what promises to be an interesting and exciting week for those in the Midlands property and construction markets!

"We're excited about working with Shakespeare Martineau to show
how integral teamwork is in both sporting and business
environments. We also share similar beliefs when it comes to
fostering upcoming talent."

Paul Blanchard, Chief Executive, Commonwealth Games England
