Graduate Recruitment

Shakespeare Martineau is a law firm which shares your ambition for success

We are original thinkers, driven to create an outstanding future for our clients, our people and our communities. Today’s trainees are the business associates and partners of the future. So our starting point is always to focus on recruiting and developing talented and passionate people.

Training contracts

Our training is renowned for the depth of support and breadth of experience it offers. This is first-class, hands-on training you can trust to develop your career.

The friendly support we give starts even before you begin. When we offer you a training contract, we match you with a current first year trainee to be your ‘buddy’. They’ll answer your questions and invite you along to social events so there’ll be lots of familiar faces to see on your first day!

We make sure that your supervisors are well-trained and supported. So as well as being experts in their field, they are confident in passing on their expertise and in supporting you.

You’ll also have a mentor to guide you through the first two years and beyond. They are there to meet you regularly to share advice, give reassurance and answer all your queries – after all, they were once in your shoes.

Take your seat

As a trainee you will spend two years experiencing at least three areas of the law. This will involve having four six-month stints, called seats, in our various departments. Tailored to the business needs and your preferences, you will gain solid all-round experience of contentious and non-contentious work. You will also benefit from the Professional Skills Course, which we supplement with extra modules to enhance your skillset. This is the highly successful way we develop your abilities and help you find your niche.

Examples of typical trainee seats:

Corporate Mergers and Acquisitions
Litigation and Dispute Resolution
Private Client
Real Estate
Restructuring and Insolvency

We offer training contracts in Birmingham, Leicester, London, Stratford-upon-Avon, Milton Keynes and Nottingham.

We are looking for trainees to start with us in September 2017, 2018 and 2019.

If you are successful in getting through the application stage, we will invite you to an assessment centre. This will help you decide if our programme is right for you – and we’ll know if you’re right for us.

We will be running the assessment centres on the following days, however successful applicants will only be expected to attend one of these days:

Tuesday 22nd August 2017

Wednesday 23rd August 2017

Friday 25th August 2017

Interviews with the successful candidates will take place in the last week of August and first two weeks of September.

Please have these dates in mind when applying.

  Apply to us

We look for bright trainees with a strong academic background. You will need:

2:1 or above in a law or non-law degree

We expect everyone to share our enthusiasm and passion for our business. But we want more than that too.

Show us what sets you apart. What makes you spirited. How you are entrepreneurial and talented. And when you show us, show us differently. Showcase practical knowhow, your personality and proof of your achievements, and you won’t go far wrong.
